Downpatrick started the half with a lot of possession, even when they lost the ball the midfield trio of Brandon Boyd, Caolain Logue and Corey McCoubery worked tirelessly to get it back, this in turn gave Portadown no time on the ball and they struggled to get out of their own half. On 10 minutes McCoubrey hit a cross field pass to Declan Looney on the right wing, with instant control he turned his marker inside out and fired a low shot into the bottom corner of the net. Downpatrick controlled the rest of the half, as Portadown couldn’t get near Shane Campbell’s goal.

It took only 31 seconds for Downpatrick to double their lead, as Logue found Eoin Rooney down the right, he brought the ball to the byline and hit a perfect cross for Ruairi Quinn to volley home. Portadown got a rare break and as they crossed into the Downpatrick box, Adam Jervis was harshly punished for a slight nudge as he won the ball in the air and the referee gave a penalty. The Portadown skipper stepped up to hit the penalty, only for Shane Campbell to make an outstanding save and keep his clean sheet.
A few moments later it was Quinn who turned provider, as he drove from midfield he slid a perfect pass to Eoin Rooney, who hit a well placed shot into the bottom corner. Downpatrick saw out the rest of the game with a lot of possession, keeping Portadown at bay. Downpatrick had many star performers today but man of the match was Caolain Logue who put in an impressive performance in midfield on his return from injury.
