Saturday 11th April – Lisburn Invitational Junior League under 14’s

Downpatrick FC 4 v Oxford Sunnyside Colts 0

Downpatrick pressed right from the start and got their reward after only 5 minutes when Declan Looney crossed from the right wing to Ruairi Quinn on the edge of the box, he hit a half volley straight into the top corner from all of 25 yards. The rest of the first half Downpatrick pressed and had some lovely spells of possession but the Oxford defence stood strong, with special praise going to their keeper who made an outstanding save to deny Brandon Boyd, when he hit a wonderful lob from around 30 yards.

Half Time: Downpatrick 1 v Oxford Sunnyside Colts 0

Downpatrick started to move the ball a lot quicker in the second half and it made a big difference as the Oxford defence couldn’t cope with the movement of Eoin Rooney, Quinn and Philip Doran. After 15 minutes Doran drove down the right and crossed for Boyd to head home at the back post and makes it two nil to Downpatrick.

A few minutes later Rooney got on the score sheet with a sublime finish into the top left corner from the edge of the box. Boyd showed his team mates what they had been missing the last few weeks with his second goal of the day, when he beat his man at the front post to rifle his shot into the bottom corner. Although Downpatrick had a lot of possession special mention must go to keeper Shane Campbell who made an outstanding save near the end, smothering the ball at the feet of the oncoming striker to hold onto his clean sheet.
