Saturday 17th September – Downpatrick Youth Football League
U15’s 9 v Kilmore Rec 1
Downpatrick got their league campaign off to a fine start with an excellent all round performance against Kilmore Rec. From the start, the boys took charge pushing forward and straightaway Andrew McClean slotted in the first goal after making a run down the left hand side. Shortly after the restart, McClean passed to Ethan Artt who pushed again to the left hand side and tapped in Downpatrick’s second.
The boys were playing as a team with defence clearing the few attempts Kilmore made with Conail Gardner, Gregory Kelly, Andrew McGrattan and Liam Toner strong in their defensive positions and jobs. McClean scored again on 7 minutes and a combination of assertive attacking play and substitutes Rian McShane, Naoise O’Hagan and Ciaran Glennon confused the Kilmore game. Artt drove home his 2nd on 22 minutes from a cracking pass through the middle from Ethan Breen. Jack Fitzsimons, Luke Shields & Breen were dominating midfield and Fitzsimons stepped up on 25mins to take a free kick which glided in easily to make it 5 – 0.
A change in positions brought in fresh legs with Andrew McGrattan taking over in goal and subs Ruari Murphy, Collie Jones, Caolan McKeown and Matthew Killen contributing well in all play. Fitzsimons received the ball in midfield and dribbled the ball past a number of players and hit the back of the net for his second in the 9th minute of the second half. Goals followed from Artt on 12 minutes, Breen on 15 minutes and a cracker from Luke Shields on 20 minutes in the second period sealing a comprehensive victory. Kilmore never really found their stride but were awarded a consolation penalty in the dying moments which was scored clearing their blank sheet to make it 9 – 1.
