Wednesday 1st April – Lisburn Invitational Junior League under 16’s

Downpatrick FC 1 v Willowbank 1

This was Downpatrick’s 1st midweek fixture, and it was played in terrible conditions, lashing rain and gale force wind. Downpatrick started on the front foot with an attack down the right wing James McAleenan passed the ball to Callum Shields who beat the defender and shot across the goal and it was Nathan McShane who finished sliding in at the back post to put his side one nil up in the opening minutes.
Downpatrick continued to create chances and with a better passing and finishing would and should have scored again. On the stroke of half time a mix up in Willowbanks defence allowed McShane to shoot from 20 yards unfortunately his effort thundered of the post.

Half Time: Downpatrick FC 1 v Willowbank 0
In the second half Downpatrick struggled in the wet conditions to create any clear chances. With 10 minutes to go and the light fading rapidly Willowbank attacked and scrambled the ball into the net. Downpatrick threw everything into attack but didn’t get the rub of the green in front of the goal.
This was definitely 2 points dropped but if Downpatrick continue to play free flowing football it won’t be long until they get back to winning ways. The players can now rest up over the Easter period and come back refreshed for our next match.
