Saturday 22nd October – NIBFA Under 16’s Cup Second Round
Ballymoney United 1 v Downpatrick FC 5
Downpatrick made the long journey up to the Joey Dunlop Sports Centre to play Ballymoney on Saturday afternoon. The visiting team started very well, they had all off the possession in the first 10 minutes but got caught with a swift counterattack and the hosts went one nil up.
Downpatrick to their credit didn’t let this goal get to them and they kept control of the game, Corey McCoubrey brought his side level when he hit a volley to finish of a 12 pass move which started in the Downpatrick defence. Before half time Downpatrick went in front, Kian Tierney’s trickery in the box won his side a penalty which Tom Smyth converted
Half Time: Ballymoney United 1 v Downpatrick FC 2
At the start of the second half Downpatrick looked the most dangerous and it was that man McCoubrey again who scored. This time he kept his head with a cool finish after being set up by Declan Looney who crossed from the right. The introduction of Ruairi Quinn had an immediate impact, more good work from Looney who sent the perfect cross into the box and Quinn volleyed home giving the Ballymoney keeper no chance.
Downpatrick sealed their passage into the next round with a fifth goal, Quinn again, this time he hit a deep cross to the back post which the Ballymoney defender headed into his own net. Star performers of the day were Adam Jervis, Kyle McKeever, Thomas Fitzsimmons and Ryan Cassidy who were the platform for everything Downpatrick did.
