Saturday 3rd January – Lisburn Invitational League under 16’s
Downpatrick FC 5 v Greenisland 2
Downpatrick went into this match short a few players from their recent cup winning squad but they started well and had a few chances from Ben Curran and John Patterson. On 20 minutes a great move involving Eoin Darragh to Nathan McShane who played in strike partner Callum Shields who delightfully chipped the ball over the Greenisland keeper from 20 yards. Downpatrick were guilty of taking their foot of the pedal and conceded a sloppy goal. Just before half time Downpatrick increased the pace and were awarded a pen with a foul on Curran. Goalkeeper Fintan Canavan came up to strike the penalty but he hit a poor shot straight at the keeper but luckily it came back to him to slot home.
Half Time: Downpatrick FC 2 v Greenisland 1
A good start to second half saw a great through ball from left back Daniel Kelly to McShane to tuck ball past the advancing goalkeeper. Downpatrick sustained the pressure and five minutes later Ben Curran laid of the ball for midfielder John Patterson to smash home.
Greenisland sneaked in to pull a goal back, but striker Shields secured the points when he finished Greenisland off with another cracker into top corner. Downpatrick’s star man was James McAleenan who stepped in to fill the position of centre back and his strength and vision set up attack after attack for Downpatrick.
