Saturday 21st February – Lisburn Invitational Junior League under 16’s
Downpatrick FC 3 v Midway 2
Downpatrick secured three points in against a battling Midway team, in truth Downpatrick should have won this game more convincingly giving the amount of possession they had. With ten minutes gone on the clock Downpatrick opened the scoring, good work down the right wing between John Hill and Andrew McCoubrey allowed Caolan Bentham to cross the ball into the box. Striker Nathan McShane was on hand to send his first time effort into the bottom corner of the net.
Half Time: Downpatrick FC 1 v Midway 0
Ten minutes into the second half Downpatrick doubled their advantage, midfielder Rory Anderson won the ball in the semi-circle before playing a defence splitting pass to striker Rory Anderson, who’s first time effort gave the Midway keeper no chance. Downpatrick should have pushed on to secure all three points after this but were caught cold when their defence failed to clear the ball allowing Midway to pull a goal back.
Anderson had a great opportunity to score his second of the game when he found himself one on one with the keeper but saw his effort well saved. The industrious Ben Curran picked the ball up just inside the Downpatrick half and set of on a mazy run which saw him get into the Midway box, he enticed the Midway defender to come out of position and had the awareness to lay the ball off to striker Callum Shields who made no mistake from ten yards out.
Midway rallied in the final five minutes and pulled another goal back after a long ball over the top caught out the Downpatrick defence which allowed the Midway striker to score past Fintan Canavan. With thoughts of scoring an equaliser Midway piled on the pressure in the last few minutes and Downpatrick had the post and a goal line clearance to thank for all three points.
