Saturday 15th October – Lisburn Invitational Junior League under 19’s

Downpatrick FC 1 v Linfield 0

Linfield started the stronger but once Downpatrick settled they began to string passes together and were extremely dangerous. Downpatrick had a couple of half chances involving Sam Kinnear and James Mahoney, while limiting Linfield to a couple of long range shots.

The breakthrough came after 25 minutes when good build up through the midfield allowed the ball to come to Sam Kinnear who showed great composure holding off the defender, look up and lob the keeper from 25 yards, this was no more than Downpatrick deserved.

Half Time: Downpatrick FC 1 v Linfield 0

The second half started similarly with Downlatrick never letting any Linfield player settle on the ball. Downpatrick were passing the ball better and were happy to allow Linfield to have the ball outside the danger areas. Linfield threatened with some long balls into the box which were dealt brilliantly by Downpatrick’s keeper and supported by a protective defence.

As the game progressed Downpatrick maintained their discipline and looked dangerous on the break. Some yellow cards were given out to both sides, but an incident involving a straight red for a Linfield tackle also resulted in a second yellow for Ben Jamison. With 5 minutes left Linfield got around the Downpatrick defence but the cross was brilliantly headed away by Liam McCarron to protect Downpatricks lead. James Mahoneys header was brilliantly turned away by the Linfield keeper to keep the match at 1-0 not long before the final whistle.
