Saturday 19th September – NAFL Border Cup 2nd Round

Albert Foundry 0 v Downpatrick FC 4

Downpatrick progressed into the third round of this year’s Border Cup with a more than convincing performance against Premier League rivals Albert Foundry. The opening chance of the game went to the home side after just five minutes but Downpatrick goal keeper Michael McKenna saved comfortably.

With twenty minutes on the clock Downpatrick opened up their account for the day. Andrew Telford who was making his first start of the season for the first team was fouled just outside the box. Barry Treacy took the free kick and with the help of a slight deflection the ball went in off the underside of the bar.

Ten minutes later Downpatrick had doubled their advantage, an over hit cross was retrieved by winger Conail McGrady, he beat the right back before chipping the ball to the back post, striker Stephen Galbraith saw his header saved but man of the match Aaron McGarry was on hand to tap the ball into the net.

Half Time: Albert Foundry 0 v Downpatrick FC 2

Downpatrick came out in the second half determined not to let Foundry into the game and with the back four of Barry Fitzsimons, Niall Walsh, Mark Holland and Blaine Connolly remaining solid, keeper McKenna had very little to do. Downpatrick’s third came via another Treacy free kick. This time the winger whipped in a ball from the left hand side and midfielder McGarry got across the front of the Foundry defender to flick the ball past the home keeper at the far post.

Not to be outdone by his midfield partner, Andy Baggley got in on the act by scoring Downpatrick’s fourth and final goal of the game. Telford broke down the left hand side and got to the by-line, he composed himself before cutting the ball back to Galbraith. He saw his effort saved by the Foundry keeper but Baggley pounced on the rebound to pro the ball into the net. Downpatrick’s reward for this impressive victory is an away trip to Nortel on Saturday 10th October.
