Saturday 1st October – Downpatrick Youth Football League under 15’s

Downpatrick FC 10 v Rossglass County 0

From the start, Downpatrick wanted to make their mark on this match with the midfield of Naoise O’Hagan, Ethan Breen, Jack Fitzsimons and Luke Shields commanding the centre of the park. Initial attacks were incessant, shots on target from Ethan Breen, Ethan Artt, Jack Fitzsimons, Andrew McClean and Collie Jones were all either well saved or drifted wide. The Rossglass back line simply couldn’t cope with the onslaught and it was only a matter of time for the floodgates to open.

Fitzsimons received the ball at the half way line and after some deft footwork, passed to O’Hagan who opened up the scoring on 13 minutes. McClean shot on 18 minutes which rebounded and Luke Shields scored their second. Downpatrick were hungry and Artt received the ball down the left wing, passed to McClean, who drove home for the third on 23 minutes.

Soon after, with the boys dominating the wings and making use of wide play, Breen passed to Shields who shot to make it 4 on 26 minutes. Rian McShane made a dash down the right hand but his hard work went wide just before the break.

Half Time Downpatrick FC 4 – Rossglass County 0

The restart brought a change in personnel and tactics and immediately the substitutes Ciaran Glennon, Caolan McKeown, Mathew Killen and Ruairi Murphy created more opportunities and excellent passes. Shields passed to Artt on the 8th minute of the second half who then made it 5-0. Goals followed from E. Breen on 11 minutes, Andrew McClean two minutes later, Jack Fitzsimons on 15 minutes and Ethan Artt on 17 minutes.

A storming run from stalwart defender Conail Gardner down the middle and picking up the ball, scored in the 18th minute sealing a comprehensive victory for the boys who never really got into 2nd gear. Rossglass boys tried their best and had some fair chances and breaks but a disciplined defence of Gardner, Gregory Kelly, Liam Toner and Andrew McGrattan were letting nothing through on this day.
