Downpatrick FC fell to their first defeat of the season at the hands of Lisburn Youth, by a score of 1 – 0. Downpatrick can have no complaints about Saturday’s result, every single player failed to perform against a team who were first to the ball on every occasion and who wanted to win the game more.
Downpatrick had two glorious chances in the first half to go in front but both Nathan McShane and Ben Curran failed to convert either chance. Time after time the Downpatrick players misplaced their passes and chose the wrong option.
The only goal of the game came ten minutes before half time, the Downpatrick defence were caught sleeping with a long ball over the top which allowed the Lisburn striker to get to the ball before goal keeper Fintan Canavan and neatly tuck the ball into the bottom corner.
Half Time: Downpatrick FC 0 v’s Lisburn Youth 1
The second half didn’t see much improvement from Downpatrick, with more misplaced passes and players taking too many touches on the ball when a simple pass was on. Chances were limited for both sides but Downpatrick almost secured a point in the dying minutes when striker Callum Shields had a brilliant opportunity to score but was thwarted.
The Downpatrick management were extremely disappointed with this performance but can’t be too hard on the players as up to Saturday they have been playing brilliantly. The only positive to be taken from Saturday is that they remain top of the league. Next up for the under 16’s is a quarter final match against North End.
