Saturday 13th December – Intermediate Cup 3rd Round
Queens 3 v Downpatrick FC 1
This match was due to be a home fixture for Downpatrick but was switched to Queens’s excellent facility at ‘The Dub’, both sides served up a feast of football in the third round of the intermediate cup. The opening 15 minutes saw both sides have plenty of possession without creating any chances.
The game burst into life after 25 minutes when the Queen’s winger got down to the by line before putting in an inviting cross, Michael McKenna looked to have everything covered but the Queens striker nipped in before he had control of the ball and was able to tap the ball into the empty net.
Downpatrick were pushing for an equaliser but five minutes later they were caught with a sucker punch, Queens hit a speculative shot from just outside the box and McKenna misjudged the flight of the ball to allow it to hit the back of the net. Faced with an uphill task against the Championship side, Downpatrick were still confident they could get back into the game. Midfielder Andy Baggley picked the ball up in midfield and went on one of his trademark runs down the middle of the pitch, the Queens defence allowed him to run unchallenged and he hit a shot from the edge of the box which the Queens keeper was unable to hold and made the score 2 – 1 to Queens.
Half Time: Queens 2 v Downpatrick FC 1
Downpatrick came out in the second half and carved out a couple of chances through strikers Andrew Telford and Eoin Boyle. The first chance fell to Telford who saw his rasping shot cannon back off the crossbar. Telford then turned provider when his cross was met by Boyle who flicked the ball towards the goal but the Queens keeper made an excellent save to deny him.
If all the other goals in the match were fortunate the third goal for Queen was an excellent strike, the Queens winger went down the left flank before cutting inside and unleashing an unstoppable shot into top corner giving Michael McKenna no chance.
