Saturday 6th September – Border Cup 1st Round

Orangefield OB 0 v’s Downpatrick FC 6

Downpatrick progressed into the second round of the Border cup in emphatic style against their league counterparts Orangefield. The visitors came out of the blocks very quickly and were ahead within five minutes. Andrew Telford scoring with a superb shot into the top corner from 10 yards after a pass from Chris Mullan.

Ten minutes later Downpatrick doubled their advantage when Chrissy Mullan picked the ball up just outside the box from a Conor McKenna pass and unleashed an unstoppable shot giving the Orangefield keeper no chance. Then on the half hour mark Downpatrick scored two quick fire goals, the first coming from Chris Mullan who finished off a neat move involving Niall Walsh and Barry Treacy. The fourth goal came from the prolific Andy Baggley who timed his run to perfection and finished off an Aaron McGarry cross.

Half Time: Orangefield OB 0 v’s Downpatrick FC 4

With the game practically over as a contest Downpatrick controlled the game with quality possession, the defence of Walsh, Mark Curran, Mark Holland and Chris McDowell were rarely troubled and goal keeper Michael McKenna had nothing to do.

Downpatrick had to wait until the final ten minutes before scoring their final two goals with Baggley claiming the fifth although there was a hint of an own goal with the ball taking a massive deflection of the Orangefield defender.

Downpatrick’s final goal came from winger Aaron McGarry who picked the ball up on the half way, he ran down the left flank before cutting in and finishing superbly marking his return to the club with a special goal. Downpatrick will be happy to progress to the next round but will almost certainly face tougher opposition.
