Saturday 7th March – NADAFL Division 1 Supplementary Cup

Newcastle FC 2nds 0 v Downpatrick FC 2nds 0

Downpatrick travelled to Newcastle on Saturday looking to register their first win in the Supplementary Cup but had to settle for a point. Both teams struggled to adjust to the gale force wind which was blowing down the field, Downpatrick played with the wind in their favour in the first half.

Downpatrick started much the brighter and created a number of chances but weren’t able to convert any of their domination into goals. Chris Curran, Adrian McCoubrey and Conaill McGrady all had shots saved by the Newcastle keeper or they missed the target. Downpatrick’s goal keeper Robbie Hagan who was largely a bystander in the first half was called into action mid way through the half when Newcastle broke and Hagan pushed their shot onto the crossbar.

Facing a gale force wind in the second half Downpatrick were expecting to be bombarded with plenty of pressure but that failed to materialise and controlled most of the play without creating too many chances. Adrian McCoubrey was unlucky when his free kick narrowly missed the top corner and McGrady went close with a snap shot from Paddy Kerrs pass.

The Downpatrick defence of David Telford, Gary Trueman, Paul O’Reilly and Barry Fitszimons were always in control and managed to keep Newcastles strikers at bay with relative ease. McCoubrey and John Glennon controlled the midfield and supplied Kerr and McGrady with plenty of ball. Debutant Carlos Djalo and winger Chris Curran were unlucky on a few occasions when Newcastle made some last ditch tackles before they could get a shot in.
