Saturday 2nd September – SBYFL under 19’s
Downpatrick FC 2 v St Mary’s
Downpatrick started the new season in a new league and opened their account in the league cup with a victory. The first ten minutes of the game saw St Mary’s press the young Downpatrick side back, but they defended resolutely with Caolain Logue and Thomas Fitzsimons dealing with every attack. As the game worn on Downpatrick started to get Kian Tierney and Conor Breen on the ball, with their neat crisp passing they started creating chances for Decky Burns and Declan Looney.
On 17 minutes Tierney picked the ball up and drove at the St Mary’s backline played a 1-2 with Corey McCoubrey then released Looney who crossed for Burns to volley home. St Marys immediately pressed for the equaliser, but Conor Logue playing in goal gave the Downpatrick backline confidence to play out form the back and stretch the game.
On 24 minutes Logue was called into action and made a good save down to his right, he got up and saw Burns making a run between the 2 centre halves, he launched the ball up field and with Burns in attendance the defence failed to deal with the ball and with a slight deflection the ball ended up in the St Mary’s net.
As the game wore on Downpatrick should’ve added to their tally but were very unlucky with Breen, Looney and Burns having chances. With minutes to go St Mary’s scored from a scrappy corner to make it an edgy final few minutes. Although they conceded late on the young Downpatrick side deserved their win.
