Saturday 3rd September – Lisburn Invitational Junior League Under 19’s
Downpatrick FC 5 v Newry City 1
Downpatrick’s first competitive game at this age level started promisingly with a comprehensive win over Newry City. Downpatrick opened the scoring just after the 15 minute mark, Ben Jamison and Caolan Bentham combined to get the ball out wide to winger Sam Kinnear. Kinnear played a delightful cross into the box for Ryan McCoubrey to head home from the six yard box.
Five minutes later Downpatrick and McCoubrey scored their second, John Hill broke into the box and saw his effort rebound of the post into the path of McCoubrey who coolly tapped the ball into the net. Just after the half hour mark Caolan Bentham made it three nil, latching onto a terrific through ball from Andrew McCoubrey and sending his left footed shot into the far corner. Newry pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after James Mahoney was judged to have fouled the Newry striker.
Downpatrick restored their three goal advantage early in the second when Ben Jamison won the ball just outside his own box, a superb pass to the feet of Sam Kinnear who beat the last man before shooting low and hard into the back of the net to make it 4 – 1. Bentham sealed the points for Downpatrick with a neat finish past the advancing Newry keeper after Andrew McCoubrey won the ball in midfield and played a brilliant diagonal pass.
Downpatrick were pleased to get off to a winning start with everybody putting in a superb performance with some fine one and two touch play, some crunching tackles and brilliant defending. Next up is a league fixture against Ballinamallard this weekend.
