Saturday 9th April – Lisburn Junior League – under 15’s
Downpatrick FC 0 v Portadown Youth 5
Downpatrick played their last league game of the season and the league leaders and due to a spate of injuries Downpatrick only had 10 men to start the game, they played with 3 at the back and Brandon Boyd providing cover from midfield. Although they were a man down Downpatrick had all the play in the first half creating chance after chance, but the Portadown keeper was in fine form and Downpatrick couldn’t get the lead that their play deserved. It would be harsh to give credit to just one player as they were all outstanding.
Half Time: Downpatrick FC 0 v Portadown Youth 0
Portadown broke the deadlock 15 minutes into the second half when the Downpatrick defence pushed up, leaving the Portadown striker offside but the ref never seen it, as he broke away Campbell closed him down but could only get a hand to the ball. Downpatrick tried to push forward to get back into the game but a combination of tired legs and bad luck in front of goal meant they couldn’t get back into the game, as they pressed they got caught again this time Campbell had no chance. Portadown were clinical in their finishing and soon had scored 5.
Downpatrick can take heart from this performance, although the scoreline finished 5 nil they ran the potential league champions ragged for long periods of the game with only ten men. In fact the referee came over and spoke to players after the game saying that he only noticed at the start of the second half that they had only ten players and that was one of the best performances he’d seen in along time.
