Downpatrick welcomed newly promoted Dundrum to a sunny Dunleath on Saturday afternoon looking for their first victory of the season.
Downpatrick started the brighter and opened the scoring within the first five minutes, Andrew McCoubrey showed his versatility by operating on the left hand side of midfield. It was his through ball for Tony McIlhone which unlocked the Dundrum defence, McIlhone timed his run perfectly and slid the ball past the visitor’s keeper.
Ten minutes later Downpatrick had the opportunity to double their advantage when they were awarded a penalty after McIlhone was brought down in the Dundrum box. Left back Conaill Kerr took the spot kick but saw his shot saved by the keeper.

The second half started much like the first half with Downpatrick on the front foot and within three minutes of the restart had scored their second of the game. A Barry Treacy corner was flicked on at the near post by Conor McCarron and was met at the back post by debutant Corey Ranaghan who crashed his volley into the back of the net.
As the game entered the final fifteen minutes McCoubrey showed his class with a well taken individual goal. He collected the ball out on the left wing before beating a couple of players, when he got to the edge of the box he played a one two with McIlhone before side-footing the ball past the helpless Dundrum keeper.
The home side completed the scoring in the final few minutes of the game, substitute Conor Logue broke down the right wing and delivered a cross into the box, McCarron saw his shot partially blocked. As the ball went up into the air Shane Matheson was in the right place to nudge the ball home for Downpatrick’s fourth.
