Wednesday 17th June – NIWFA Division 1 South

Downpatrick FC Ladies 7 v Killyleagh YC Ladies 2

Downpatrick Ladies welcomed neighbours Killyleagh to a sunny Dunleath in the Division 1 South league fixture, both teams have had different league campaigns so far with Killyleagh rebuilding for the future and having a much younger team than Downpatrick who have plenty of experience in their ranks and find themselves currently sitting near the top of the league.

Downpatrick started the game positively and within ten minutes central midfielder Orla Boyle had put them in front. Downpatrick’s early pressure led to Killyleagh conceding a corner, Louise Baker delivered an inch perfect cross for Boyle to rise and head the ball home.

Midway through the half Downpatrick doubled their advantage, top goalscorer Kyla Trainor was on hand to shoot past the Killyleagh goal keeper after midfielder Emma Shields made a lung bursting run down the wing. For the final ten minutes of the half Downpatrick were guilty of taking their foot of the pedal and this allowed Killyleagh to come back into the game and the visitors managed to reduce the arrears with a fine strike just before halftime.

At half time the ‘Greens’ received some stern words from manager Mark Leahy and the second half performance was a more commanding performance, right from the first whistle Downpatrick increased their intensity and were rewarded two minutes into the half. This time Trainor turned provider when she deceived the Killyleagh centre half and powered her way into the box before having the presence of mind to roll the ball across for her strike partner Morgan Shannon to tap the ball into the net.

A ten minute spell midway through the second half saw Downpatrick blitz their opponents and score three quick goals and securing all three points. The first and third goals of that ten minute spell were scored by Kyla Trainor meaning she completed her hat-trick, Orla Boyle also got her second of the game when she collected the ball on the half way line and ran to the edge of the box before hitting a speculative shot which deceived the Killyleagh keeper.

As the game entered the final ten minutes, Downpatrick’s superior fitness started to show and they were playing with great confidence, controlling the play with great combinations especially between Trainor, Shield, Shannon and Boyle. Trainor completed the scoring for the homeside with a superb shot from the edge of the box. Killyleagh scored a consolation goal in the dying minutes to make the scoreline 7 – 2 for Downpatrick.
