Wednesday 15th April – Lisburn Invitational Junior League under 16’s Cup Semi-Final

In their 1st season Downpatrick under 16’s have managed to make it through to their second final of the season beating Ridgeway 2 – 0. Downpatrick controlled the majority of the match and had enough chances to score more.

Ben Curran smashed a shot against the crossbar in the opening five minutes, Nathan McShane forced the Ridgeway keeper into a couple of fine saves. Downpatrick made the breakthrough on 20 minutes with a run down the left wing from Tiernan Noade he laid it of for McShane to cross and Callum Shields was there to finish with a side foot volley into the net.

Again in the second half Downpatrick created chances through Andrew McCoubrey and Callum Shields, both seeing their efforts well saved by the Ridgeway keeper. Midway through the half Downpatrick doubled their advantage, they forced a corner which was taken by Noade, his cross was deep to the back post but was headed upwards and Ben Campbell, Downpatrick’s centre half rifled a left foot volley home from 15 yards to settle the game.
On a night were Downpatrick had a few absentees they were able to bring in two of their u14 players, Tom Smyth who slotted into right back after 10 minutes when John Hill got injured, he had a solid performance giving nothing away and Eoin Rooney who got 30 minutes and work tirelessly for the team setting up chances for Rory Anderson and Callum Shields.
