Saturday 19th November – Lisburn Invitational Junior League under 19’s

Downpatrick FC 6 v Newry City 1

Downpatrick settled quickly and continued to grow stronger in what turned out to be possibly their most impressive 45 minutes of the season. They showed great composure around the pitch and put a lot of pressure on a Newry defence that struggled to cope with the pace and energy of Downpatrick. A goal mouth scramble was poked in by Joe Healy to get Downpatrick off to a great start after 5 minutes.

Callum Shields made it two nil after starting then finishing a fantastic move involving Sam Kinnear and James Mahoney. Callum turned provider soon after to play in James Mahoney who stayed composed to drill the ball past the Newry keeper. Joe Healy heaped more misery on Newry, his strong running and a one two with James Mahoney resulted in Healy making no mistake with a clever finish.

Downpatrick still had to be careful of dangerous Newry breakaways but selfless running and commitment kept these to a minimum. Liam McCarrons strong running forced another corner and Conor Logue’s perfectly weighted cross was headed in like a bullet by Callum Shields.

Half Time: Downpatrick FC 5 v Newry City 0

The match as a contest was effectively over and the second half was a less exciting affair with Newry trying hard and having lots of possession. However, they only got one goal to show for their efforts. In the end it was Downpatrick who had the last word when Matthew Shearer made no mistake with a fine effort after being put through by Healy.
