Downpatrick FC 3 v Ballyclare Colts 1

Downpatrick pressed Ballyclare from the start and created a few chances early on but both Declan Looney and Eoin Rooney failed to convert. Their pressure paid of shortly after when Downpatrick won a corner after 14 minutes. Ruairi Quinn delivered it to the front post, Looney nodded the ball into the path of centre half Tom Smyth who volleyed it home to give his side the lead.

The lead only lasted a few minutes, when Ballyclare capitalised on a short back pass, they’re striker nipped in and the slid the ball past Shane Campbell to level the match. This increased Downpatricks intensity as Corey McCoubrey and Brandon Boyd chased and harried Ballyclare in midfield forcing them into mistakes, with Downpatrick dominating the play they won another corner, which Quinn again delivered the perfect cross this time for Eoin Rooney to prod home and put his side back in front. Downpatrick continued their pressing until half time, but couldn’t improve the score.

Half Time: Downpatrick FC 2 v Ballyclare Colts 1

Downpatrick started the second half as they finished the first in total control with Kyle McKeever, Caolain Logue, Smyth and Thomas Fitzsimons holding a strong line, this gave their team mates the confidence to express their passing game and give Ballyclare the run-around. For all the possession and chances that Downpatrick created they couldn’t convert them.

Then in the last few minutes of the game, Oistin Devlin who replaced Smyth won the ball in the middle of the park and released Rooney who beat 2 men and then he showed great composure, rounded the keeper and calmly slotted home to secure the points for his side.
