Ardglass Swifts 1 v Downpatrick Athletic

Downpatrick made the short journey out to the seaside village to take on Ardglass Swifts in the Premier Division of the Newcastle League on Saturday and comfortably came away with all three points. Things didn’t start of too well for the visitors, a mix up in midfield allowed the ball to be played to the Ardglass right winger to go through and goal and he calmly chipped the ball over the advancing Robbie Hagan to put his side in front.

Unfortunately that was as good as it got for the home side, for the remainder of the half Downpatrick controlled the game but had to wait until a few minutes before halftime to get the equaliser. Ciaran Evans was fouled inside the box and Conaill Kerr made no mistake from the spot sending his kick to the top corner.

Half Time: Ardglass Swifts 1 v Downpatrick Athletic 1

Downpatrick scored their second goal within two minutes of the restart, centre half Kevin Gracey rose highest to head a Ciaran Evans corner into the back of the net. On the hour mark Downpatrick doubled their advantage, a good passage of play from Conor Curran and Chris Magee allowed them to play in Evans, the winger composed himself and cut the ball back into the box and substitute Peter Telford drilled his shot past the Swifts keeper.

The fourth goal for Downpatrick came from striker Frank Starkey, he played a one two with Telford on the edge of the box before rounding the keeper and passing the ball into the empty net. Ten minutes before the final whistle the visitors scored their fifth of the game, again Evans was involved. His shot was comfortably saved by the Ardglass keeper and Adrian McCoubrey was in the right place to tap the ball into the back of the net.

Ciaran Evans capped of an impressive display by scoring Downpatrick’s sixth and final goal of the game to give the visitors an emphatic win. Downpatrick’s superb result was only marred with the news that their influential captain and sweeper Matthew Carson faces a spell on the side-lines after suffering torn ligaments in his ankle.
