Saturday 21st November – IFA Intermediate Cup 1st Round

Dundonald 2 v Downpatrick FC 3

Downpatrick progressed to the second round of this year’s Intermediate cup with a good performance over Border Cup finalists Dundonald at the Billy Neill playing fields on Saturday. The visitors started brightly and went in front with a ‘worldy’ from winger Barry Treacy. He collected the ball on the right hand side before cutting in on his left foot and unleashing an unstoppable shot from 25 yards straight into the top corner, the Dundonald keeper didn’t even move.

Ten minutes later Dundonald were level, a long ball over the top caught out the Downpatrick defence. Their striker raced clean through and rounded the advancing Downpatrick keeper Michael McKenna and passing the ball into the net. As the game approached half time Downpatrick got their noses back in front. A cross from Christian Holland out on the left was only half cleared to the waiting striker Eoin Boyle and his first time volley from outside the box flew into the back of the net.

Half Time: Dundonald 1 v Downpatrick FC 2

In the opening fifteen minutes of the second half Downpatrick had the opportunity to stretch their advantage when they were awarded a penalty. A ball over the top from Treacy was collected by Aaron McGarry before he was taken down by the Dundonald defender. Top goal scorer Stephen Galbraith placed the ball on the spot but saw his penalty sail high over the crossbar.

Downpatrick were punished ten minutes later when Dundonald captain Ryan Harvey received the ball on the left wing, he took on and beat right back Terence Bell to reach the by-line. The captain tried to cut the ball back into the box but as Blaine Connolly was trying to recover he sent the ball into his own net to make it two all.

As the game entered the final ten minutes Downpatrick got the all important third goal. McGarry showed great skill on the left wing to beat the Dundonald right back and sent over an inch perfect cross for Boyle to score from just inside the penalty spot. Dundonald piled on the pressure in the final few minutes but Downpatrick were equal to it.
