Turley and McMahon Shine in Seconds Win

Downpatrick seconds continued their impressive winning run with another fine performance against Castlewellan in Annsborough on Saturday. Touser Holland’s men took a while to get into their stride but when they did Castlewellan couldn’t handle their slick passing and forward play.

It took Downpatrick until 5 minutes before half time before they broke the deadlock through striker Damien Turley. Turley was played in by midfielder Adrian McCoubrey to the edge of the box and the big striker shot from just outside the box into the bottom corner giving the Castlewellan keeper no chance.

Within two minutes of the restart Downpatrick doubled their advantage and again it was Turley who scored the goal, this time Christian Holland swung in a corner with his sweet left foot, the ball bounced in the box and Turley was on hand to slam the ball home.

Ten minutes after half-time ace marksman Sean McMahon got on the score sheet, his strike partner Turley controlled a long ball before playing in McMahon who beat the keeper to the ball and had the simplest of tap ins into the net. Castlewellan pulled a goal back five minutes later when the Castlewellan striker gave Robbie Hagan in the Downpatrick nets no chance with a fine shot.

Sean McMahon scored his second goal of the game with ten minutes remaining, winger Conaill Kerr made a surging run down the left wing and sent over a fine cross for McMahon to control and shoot into the bottom corner. Almost from the restart Castlewellan scored their second goal, when their striker caught the Downpatrick defence sleeping and made it 4 – 2.

Downpatrick secured all three points with minutes remaining when Sean McMahon completed his hat-trick with a fine team goal which started in defence. Chris Curran played a cultured ball up to Turley who had the presence of mind to play in McMahon with a brilliant flick. McMahon spotted the keeper of his line and delightfully lobbed him to make it 5 – 2.
